Got a Classic ‘Vette or Cadillac? Be Prepared for These Common Problems!

Don’t let this blog post’s title scare you; the best thing in the world is a classic Corvette or Cadillac. Still, these classics often come with some problems for their owners, but the problems are not enough to make the owner regret investing in the automobile. In addition, RB Auto Service works on classic Caddies and ‘Vettes, so we can help you with the following problems should you experience them.

Fuel Issues

If your classic beauty is old enough, and we’re jealous if it is, the ethanol found in gasoline today can harm the fuel system. Ethanol wasn’t put in fuel decades ago, so your classic may not be set up to handle it. We can replace older fuel parts with new ones so they’re equipped to process the ethanol. We can also recommend some fuel additives that will help prevent ethanol damage.

Running Too Hot

This is so common in classic cars. Think about driving conditions when your ‘Vette or Caddie was built and driving conditions now. Classic cars were not engineered or manufactured to go fast and far. Consequently, they overheat easily. They also never sat in traffic like we do today. Classics were built to use air to keep the engine cool, so try not to drive your classic on anything other than open roads.

Brake Problems

This is an easy fix because classic brake systems are easy to maintain. Just keep in mind that they can’t warn you if something is wrong like your brand new Corvette can. There isn’t a brake dashboard light to turn on when the brake pads need to be replaced. Stay on top of your classic’s brake system maintenance. This ensures you always have new parts so you don’t run into trouble.

Electrical Trouble

If you just bought your classic beauty and haven’t had the chance yet to really inspect it, don’t be surprised if you find damaged electrical wiring. Depending on where the classic car was stored, critters could have made the vehicle their home at one point and they love to chew on electrical wiring. If the alternator and starter are original, those will also likely need to be replaced.

Parts

Finally, finding parts for your classic Corvette or Cadillac can be a real headache sometimes. Some parts just aren’t available anymore because they aren’t manufactured and are sold out – everywhere. Don’t panic. Online shopping has made getting classic automotive parts much easier and what can’t be bought can oftentimes be rebuilt. Be prepared for trouble from time to time, though.
